Marianske Lazne or Marienbad as it’s known internationally, is one of the most famous spa towns in the Czech Republic, located in the region of Bohemia, not far from the German border. Although not a large town, it is rich in history, culture, and things to see, much of which is linked to the natural springs: there’s the spectacular Kur Kolonnade, a cast iron and glass pavilion designed by the architects Miksch and Niedzielski and erected over the springs Kreuzquelle, Rudolfsquelle and Ambrosiusquelle. Also to see in the town is Goethe Square, with its monument and museum dedicated to the poet and writer Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who stayed here several times. There’s also the “Singing Fountain”, a pool fed by 250 jets of water and fitted with a sound system that plays famous music for 8 months a year. It’s also worth taking time to see the Kurpark gardens, and the Russian and English churches. Just a short drive will take you to other famous spa towns like Karlsbad and Franzensbad, or Pilsen, the “city of beer”! In the immediate vicinity there’s also the Boheminimum Miniaturpark, stables for excursions on horseback, and the Castle of Kynžvart. Joachimsthal Valley is nearby, famous for its mines, the Convent of Telpa with its museum and library where it conserves precious incunables and, naturally, Prague is near enough for a day trip at 170 km from the hotel.
