Not to be missed out on, a short distance from the town of Atena Lucana where the Grand Hotel Osman is found is the Padula Charterhouse (Certosa di San Lorenzo), which is one of the biggest monasteries in the world with the original structure dating to the 14th century. Other major attractions in the area include the Pertosa Caves (Grotte dell’Angelo) which span from Pertosa to Auletta and, of course, the Cilento National Park and Vallo di Diano. The national park is one of the most important biogeographic habitats in Italy with around 1800, many rare, species of plants, and hundreds of animal species including the Apennine wolf. Inside the National Park is Teggiano, with its beautiful historic centre, its monuments and works of art. A little bit further, but well worth the distance, is Paestum. The town was founded by the Greeks on the Sele plains in the 7th century B.C. The ruins of the ancient city and the Temple of Neptune, which some studies date to the 5th century B.C., have been well preserved. Another well preserved site in the city is the so-called church which was actually a temple dedicated to Hera and a temple of Ceres, which over time was converted to a Christian church, the city also contains some Roman era homes.
