Grand Hotel Primus ****
Ptuj is the oldest town in Slovenia and is located in the lower Drava Valley, in north west Slovenia. Founded by the Romans in the year 1 BC and called Poetovia, this town has been popular since this era thanks to the beneficial properties of the local thermal water, which the guests at Grand Hotel Primus (an hotel that takes its name from the Roman General Marcus Antonius Primus) can make full use of. In honour of its origins, the onsite spa was created and inspired by the ancient imperial baths, and other facilities at the hotel also recall the Roman civilisation, such as the design of the congress centre. Located just outside the centre of Ptuj and along the Drava river, Grand Hotel Primus boasts a splendid view of the city’s castle, as well as a restaurant that serves up the best dishes from the Slovenian and European cuisines. Gala dinners and tasting evenings can also be held here, and guests can enjoy the onsite club and bar which hosts live music. Various other means of entertainment can be found near the hotel, including a 18 hole golf course, cycling, tennis, basketball, volleyball, mini golf and water sports on the Ptuj lake, ranging from surfing and water skiing to sailing, canoeing and fishing.
The Valens Augusta Spa at Grand Hotel Primus is decorated in a Roman style and is divided into three sections: at the Imperium beauty farm guests can undergo face and body treatments; the Vespasianus boasts a large pool heated to 33°C, a children’s pool and two Jacuzzi tubs; and, lastly, the Flavia health farm which features a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi tub. Guests can also make use of the nearby Ptuj Spa which expands over 4200m² and includes 13 pools, 7 of which are outdoors, a sauna centre, baths, a large range of massages and many treatments and therapies, including paraffin wraps.
The 116 rooms at Grand Hotel Primus (30 singles, 57 doubles, 18 junior suites and 11 senior suites), and the 3 luxury Suite, all have air conditioning, a telephone, cable television, a safe box, minibar and an internet connection. Many of the rooms have a private balcony, and the Superior rooms also have a bath tub that is fed with thermal water, whilst the Suites boast a Jacuzzi tub, sauna and panoramic terrace.
Grand Hotel Primus’s restaurant serves up the best dishes from the Slovenian and European cuisines using recipes that have been passed down from ancient Roman times. A slice of the famous Primus cake is a must here, as is tasting some of the local wines, and, in fact, the Hotel’s Club Gemina XIII organises wine and food tasting events.
Some of the Hotel’s services and facilities:
Ptuj is the oldest city in Slovenia and was witness to some of the most flourishing periods of the Roman era and there are many remains proving this, and it is further remembered each August during historical re-enactments. Ptuj is also the hometown of the most important carnival event in Slovenia (Kurentovanje) which lasts numerous days and involves various events related to the local wine which is quite renowned (in fact, a visit to the oldest winery in Slovenia is a must in the Carthusian monastery). Just 25km away is Maribor, the second biggest city in Slovenia and it is home to the oldest vines in the world, and Lent which is located on the shores of the Drava river where various cultural events take place during the summer. A 20 minute drive away on the motorway will take you to the Pohorje massif where, during the winter, many skiers go to enjoy the slopes and where, during the summer, visitors can enjoy the nature.
