Noto, also known as the “stone garden” or the “golden city” was built out of the ruins of an earthquake in 1693 a project carried out by the Jesuit Fra Ignazio Italia and characterized by a particular baroque style called “nitino”. The City was declared a UNESCO world heritage site as is Siracusa which after Circerone, is considered the biggest and most beautiful of the Greek cities. Among many other attractions there is the biggest Greek theatre in the west, the biggest sacrificial alter in the Greek world, one of the biggest amphitheatres in the Roman world. Other sights to see are the catacombs, the byzantine remains, Aragonese and Renaissance palaces, baroque buildings and inquiries, neoclassical works and liberty style neighbourhoods: an extraordinary alternation between the classical and the modern world. Noto is not far from two of the most famous sites in Italy, Etna and Taormina. Etna is the highest volcano in Europe and one of the biggest in the world, and today you can go as high as 2000m above sea level and admire the breath-taking view. Taormina is one of the most renowned sites both for seaside tourism as well as architectural and cultural and has always been a hot spot for the privileged and cultured classes. Do not miss out on a visit to the famous Greco-Roman theatre. Another trip which is more than worthwhile is one to the famous Villa del Casale in the Piazza Armerina, dating from the Roman period and Agrigento with its suggestive Valle dei Templi and the archaeological zone.
