Les Plaisirs d'Antan ****
The town of Jovençan, just 7 minutes’ drive from Aosta, is a place nestled in the vineyards and orchards, where the ancient rural traditions of Valdaosta are preserved and popular customs linked to plant medicine are passed down. The philosophy of the Relais de Charme Les Plaisirs d’Antan is inspired by this naturetherapy, with each of the 6 bedrooms dedicated to a different medicinal plant and its perfume. It has a restaurant that serves cuisine that include soups based on wild herbs, and a spa with a magical atmosphere that contains a large swimming pool that leads from in the spa out into the garden. All this is just a minutes’ from the ski lifts of Pila (with free shuttle bus), offering stays of skiing or walking in the mountains that can be capped off in the Relais, for an evening of relaxation and excellent dining.
A swimming pool of 60 square meters with hydro-massage areas leads from the spa out into the garden and solarium. The Wellness Centre has 500 square meters of facilities and access is free for guests with aromatherapy and chromotherapy, a relaxation and herbal tea room. The centre also offers massages and beauty treatments.
The 6 bedrooms of Les Plaisirs d’Antan are all unique and named after 6 different medicinal and aromatic plants (violet, marigold, birch, mint, lavender and tilia) and perfumed with their essences and furnished in the colours of the plants and with reference to Valdaostan tradition. All rooms have a telephone, flat screen TV with Sky channels, a fridge-bar, and a king-size shower. Rooms also have broadband internet connection.
The restaurant-brasserie La Gabella di Les Plaisirs d’Antan is located in a 17th century barn that has been elegantly converted and furnished and serves typical Valdaostan and Alpine dishes, including pierrades, bourguignonne, raclette, fondue savoiarde, tariflette, or the “Favo”, an exquisite traditional bean soup. A taste of Valdaosta is also available in the form of a sweet afternoon snack served in a dedicated room.

A stay in Jovençan would not be complete without a visit to the Maison des Anciens Remèdes, where the rural history and culture of Valdaosta is preserved, with the traditional herbal remedies and use of medicinal plants. In the city, you mustn’t miss the chance to visit the monument complex of Sant’Orso with its Gothic church, Ottonian frescoes, the crypt and the cloister. Of notable historic and artistic importance is also the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giovanni Battista, the main place of worship in the city. Just outside of Aosta, at the start of the Cogne Valley, you can visit the Royal Castle of Sarre, once the hunting residence of the King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II and as such, furnished with the trophies of chamois and Alpine ibex.
