The natural resources are one of the major attractions not only of Tortoreto, but of the entire Abruzzo region. Just outside the town itself, there is the Oasi Naturalistica park, with a botanical garden and 3 hectares of nature reserve which is home to a host of deer and other animals. For nature lovers, an excursion in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga national parks are a must. In the mountain community of Laga, you can visit Castelli, one of the most charming historic villages in Italy, famous for its artisans and the Church of San Donato famous for its beautiful majolica ceiling. Campli also has a characterful centre, historic fortifications, and the famous National Archeological Museum. Still in the area around Tortoreto, there is the medieval town of Faraone Vecchio, known as the “Ghost town”, which is completely abandoned and unquestionably fascinating. The city of Teramo is rich in art and culture, with attractions such as the Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Bernardo, the Cloisters of San Giovanni, Madonna delle Grazie, and Sant’Antonio, and the remains of a Roman theatre.
