One of the architectural and artistic jewels of Tuscany, well known also for its cuisine, the 15 medieval towers of San Gimignano are a spectacular sight for visitors. As you pass through one of the gates in the fortified city walls, you can take a walk through the enchanting historic centre, among the medieval buildings, tiny workshops, and typical restaurants. Near the city, it’s certainly worth a visit to the sanctuary of Pancole, the old part of Certaldo where Giovanni Boccaccio lived and died, Monteriggioni in the Elsa Valley, with its large fortified walls, and Volterra, with its part medieval and part Etruscan walls, and charming historic centre.
Less than an hour’s drive from the resort is Florence, where you can explore the centre on foot and see the cathedral, the church of Santa Maria Novella, the Uffizi museum, the Medici Chapels, Palazzo Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, the Ponte Vecchio bridge and the Gardens of Boboli. Nearer still, is Siena, with its historic “contrade” quarters, Piazza del Campo, the cathedral, and the Medici fortress.
Also, don’t miss the chance to visit some of the many wine producers in the area, most of which are open to wine tasting and tours of the vineyard.
